Today NGOs and community groups around the world raise awareness and promote the conservation of wetlands and celebrate World Wetlands Day. This year’s theme is “Wetlands for our future; sustainable livelihoods”.

Customers are suspending contracts with Indonesia’s second largest pulp and paper company APRIL after we exposed its destruction of rainforests and fire-prone peatland.

Sitting in my comfortable office chair and watching these terrible images come through the picture desk, I feel a desperate need to stop this destruction. The devastating forest fires that swept through Sumatra recently caused record breaking air pollution in parts of Malaysia and Singapore.

From forests to ashes: fires in Indonesia

Some rather grim images were sent out from our picture desk yesterday. Taken on Sunday by Ardiles Rante, they show the devastation caused by fire in the peatland forests outside Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province in Sumatra. So that's another few thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide sent up into the atmosphere, and seeing photos like these make me realise our ongoing campaign to protect these forests from the ever-expanding palm oil industry is even more essential.
