Peter Mandelson, Greenpeace and GMB call for state-of-the-art ship recycling in Britain

Peter Mandelson MP, Greenpeace and the GMB today (Tuesday 23rd March) called for a state of the art ship recycling industry to be developed in Britain and for the government to stop British naval ships being broken up on the beaches of Bangladesh and India.

The joint initiative known as 'START Ship Recycling' also called for government action at a European level to ensure that all EU ships are only decommissioned and recycled at specialist European shipyards.

A team of Greenpeace climbers has scaled Big Ben and held a banner, reading 'TIME FOR THE TRUTH' beneath the clock face.

At around 6.30am on the first anniversary of the US-lead invasion of Iraq two volunteers climbed over two fences separating Westminster Bridge from the Houses of Parliament. Free-climbing using specialist equipment that ensured there was no damage to the structure, it took one hour for the Greenpeace team to reach the famous clock face.

Speaking from Parliament Square, Greenpeace Executive Director Stephen Tindale said,

Greenpeace today demanded that the Belgian Government seize a huge cargo ship in the port of Antwerp loaded with timber from Indonesia's rainforests where logging is threatening the survival of orang-utans and tigers. Greenpeace boarded the ship at 15:00 hrs this afternoon in an attempt to stop it delivering its cargo to the Belgian port of Antwerp. Greenpeace researchers have been tracking the cargo ship since it was loaded with rainforest timber in Indonesia in early February.

Judges' refusal to release Attorney-General's full advice means trial was 'unfair'

Fourteen Greenpeace volunteers who sought the Attorney-General's full advice on the Iraq war today vowed to appeal after a court convicted them on charges of aggravated trespass and criminal damage.

Lawyers for the Attorney General today succeeded in keeping his full advice on the legality of the war secret.

Greenpeace had this morning sought a witness summons forcing the government to reveal the full advice. Greenpeace says the advice is vital to the defence of 14 of its volunteers, who face charges relating to the occupation of tanks at Marchwood military base in the run up to the war.

What's happening?
Tony Blair's legal case for war will come under scrutiny on Tuesday when fourteen Greenpeace activists appear in court in Southampton. They face charges relating to the occupation of tanks in February 2003 at the Marchwood military port in Southampton, from where hardware and supplies were being sent to Iraq. The occupation was part of a week of actions at Marchwood aimed at stopping the build up to war (1).

An influential committee of MPs has today announced that the Government should not commercialise GM maize on the basis of the results of the recent Farm Scale Evaluations (FSE). Amidst rumours that Tony Blair has already decided to give GM maize the go-ahead, the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) unanimously agreed that the GM maize trials were "unsatisfactory, indeed invalid." They urge the Government to carry out further tests on GM maize, but this time comparing it to less intensive forms of farming like organic.

Tesco linked to sales of whale meat in Japan

Leading UK retailer, Tesco PLC, has been closely linked to the sale of products from Japan's controversial hunting of whales, dolphins and porpoises (collectively known as cetaceans), revealed the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) and Greenpeace today.

EIA investigations have revealed that C Two-Network, a Japanese supermarket chain and a member of the Tesco Group, sells canned cetaceans products in 32 of its 78 stores and fresh cetaceans products in 10 stores. Tesco purchased more than 95% of the Japanese company in July 2003.
