Iceland urged to cancel remaining whale hunt

Iceland moved toward ending whaling yesterday with the announcement it was scaling its 'scientific' hunt back from 250 whales a year to 25.

"This is a major step in the right direction," said Willie Mackenzie from Greenpeace UK "the government of Iceland should realise that whales are worth more to them alive than dead, and cancel the rest of the hunt."

Greenpeace today won an agreement from Sainsbury's to meet with them to discuss how the supermarket giant can remove GM from their milk supply.

'Jamie Oliver' took a herd of cows to Sainsbury's London HQ this morning and told the supermarket giant - "GM milk ain't pukka."

The Greenpeace pantomime cows invaded the building while the Jamie lookalike dumped a thousand pints of Sainsbury's own-brand milk onto the pavement outside the HQ. The supermarket chain produces milk from cows fed on GM. The policy results in thousands of tonnes of GM feed being imported into Britain each year.

New report shows that dairy industry can immediately go GM-free

The UK dairy industry can go GM-free virtually overnight, with no cost to the consumer or the farmer, according to a new report published today (May 13, 2004) by Greenpeace.

Greenpeace is set to challenge James Wolfensohn, President of the World Bank, to establish a new direction for World Bank lending on energy and to immediately increase lending on renewable energy projects to equal lending on fossil fuels. Greenpeace would welcome the opportunity to work with the World Bank to implement clean energy projects in the developing world if such a re-balancing in its energy portfolio took place.

EU trashes Indonesian rainforests

Timber from trashed Indonesian rainforests is being used in new EU buildings in Brussels, threatening the survival of the orang-utan and the Sumatran tiger.

Greenpeace investigators discovered that both the home of the EU - the Berlaymont - and the Economic and Social Committee building use Indonesian rainforest plywood for walls and flooring. The plywood was supplied by companies known to have been trading in illegal timber.

Nuclear Decommissioning Authority at risk of delay - taxpayers could be left footing the bill for future bailouts of private nuclear operators

A leading QC has said today that the Government cannot pass its planned Energy Bill without EC approval because it may breach European rules on state aid. Greenpeace released the legal opinion as the proposed Energy Bill is due for its second reading in the House of Commons today (Monday 10th May).

Environmental campaigners have taken up a challenge from the producers of the upcoming blockbuster The Day After Tomorrow, by launching a new website.

www.thedayaftertomorrow.org is a spoof on the dot com website of the same name. The movie, to be launched on 28 May, recounts a fictional disaster in which climate change brings about a new ice age. The producers have stated that campaigners should take advantage of the film.
