Greenpeace is developing projects in close partnership with local communities and organisations by supporting the self-demarcation of the Deni indigenous peoples lands. Greenpeace is providing a step towards the protection of a remote forest area under threat from multinational logging companies.
Honfleur, France/Amsterdam, 29 July - Six Greenpeace activists preventing the offloading of criminal Amazon timber from two multinational companies, Lepeyre and WTK, wre arrested by the French special police in the port of Honfleur in France this morning. Despite the removal of the activists, the Aquitania was unable to prolong its stay in the port, and was forced to leave Honfleur without offloading its criminal cargo.
The Amazon rainforest is one of the biologically richest areas in the world containing more than one-third of the world's remaining ancient forests and supporting up to 50% of the planet's land-based animal and plant species. The Amazon contains more than 2.5 million species of insects, more than 300 species of mammals, 2000 species of fish and more than 60,000 species of plants.
