Nanotechnology is not really a single technology - it is about doing things at a very small scale. It gets its name from the 'nanometre' which is a million times smaller than a millimetre, or about 80,000 times smaller than a human hair. Manipulation and measurement of things, including atoms, on a scale of 1-100 nanometres is what nanotechnology is all about.
Nanotechnology, a new discipline that involves manipulating and measuring things on a scale more than 800 times smaller than a human hair, is set to revolutionise science and technology.
New technologies feature prominently in Greenpeace campaigns. While we campaign against the technology we believe will have a profound negative impact on the environment (like genetically modified crops and nuclear power), we also campaign in favour of those which provide solutions (like renewable energy and waste treatment technologies).
Greenpeace scientific report exposes a serious threat
A scientific report published by Greenpeace Mediterranean today shows that official plans to build a pipe by-passing the Kishon River in northern Israel will cause the Haifa Bay area to be poisoned by toxic chemicals.
