A glacier in Greenland

Independent scientists on board the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise have made a dramatic discovery about the Greenland glacier Kangerdlugssuaq. Preliminary findings show that the speed of the glacier has increased beyond all expectations and it is now travelling at three times the speed it was in 1988 making it one of the fastest moving glaciers in the world.

Greenpeace today released new visual evidence of the impacts of climate change. Dramatic new photos of Patagonian glaciers taken by a research team on board the Greenpeace vessel Arctic Sunrise show the extent of glacier retreat this century, when compared to photos of the same glaciers taken from the same point in 1928.

During November and December 2003, our ship the MV Arctic Sunrise is visiting and supporting the local communities of Para State, who have long been fighting against the invasion of their traditional lands by grileiros (land grabbers), and loggers. The communities are working with Greenpeace to create a protected reserve in the region, for legal and sustainable forestry operations and for governance and social justice.

Every year, the Japanese whaling fleet sets sail to Antarctic waters to hunt whales in the Southern Oceans Whale Sanctuary. These bogus 'scientific' operations violate the International Whaling Commission's (IWC) sanctuary regime and undermine international law.

The British leader of an international team in the Antarctic has demanded that Jack Straw 'gets serious about Japan's efforts to secure a return to full-scale commercial whaling' after the Foreign Secretary failed to publicly condemn attempts by the Japanese government's use of development aid to buy votes in support of commercial whaling.
