War and weapons of mass destruction

Greenpeace fully supports disarming Iraq, and indeed all nations that have weapons of mass destruction (WMD), including the United Kingdom. But pre-emptive military strikes will not help control or abolish these weapons.

India, Pakistan and Israel are known to have nuclear weapons; North Korea is openly seeking to acquire them. All are outside the realms of any international control. The Bush administration has stated that at least 13 countries are pursuing biological weapons research. Does Bush intend to attack each of these in turn?

Greenpeace to go to court to stop shipment of nuclear bomb materials

Greenpeace is to go to the High Court in an attempt to prevent British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) shipping weapons-useable plutonium half-way round the world from Japan to the UK later this week.

The faulty fuel, a mixture of plutonium and uranium oxides, contains 255kg of plutonium, enough to make 50 nuclear weapons. Nuclear scientists have confirmed that it would be relatively easy to separate out the plutonium in the discarded fuel to create a nuclear weapon.

Labour MPs urged to fight Blair on new nukes

Campaigners today urged Labour MP's to 'say enough is enough and call time on Blair's terrifying new nuclear weapons policy.' The call came after Greenpeace discovered that the government is building a massive new nuclear weapons construction facility in the Berkshire countryside. Military analysts have warned that the project could be part of the government's new first-use policy on non-nuclear states. The new establishment could be used to build low-yield nuclear bombs known as 'bunker busters.'

Aldermaston fire fighting appliances unfit for service

Three incidents out of 100 revealed by CND that occurred in 1999 at Britain's atomic weapons factory at Aldermaston. On April 1, the Government will hand over management from Hunting BRAE to a different team. The bad news is that the new team comprises BNFL ('fundamentally flawed' managers of Sellafield) partnered by Lockheed Martin - a US company with a similarly poor record.

Rainbow Warrior in Cherbourg to protest against plutonium fuel shipments

The Greenpeace ship SV Rainbow Warrior arrived today in Cherbourg to protest the imminent shipment of weapons-usable plutonium fuel from France to Japan, the first-ever of its kind. Warning that Japan's drive to amass plutonium threatens regional stability and international nuclear disarmament efforts, the international environmental group labelled the imminent shipment a "recipe for disaster" and called on the French, British and Japanese government to cancel the transport.
