VW: what a social media fail looks like

What I love about social media is that you can’t fake it.

For all the hundreds of millions of dollars companies like Volkswagen pump into their advertising machines (for VW it’s a cool £1.5bn every year) they can’t crack social media. And that’s down to one simple reason: they fear honesty.

It's the end of the road for one of our campaign legends: Brian.

Only six months ago, Brian was working for the Dark Side - an anonymous Volkswagen employee only concerned with getting through his day job. He took orders from his superiors without questioning them. He did what he was told.

But then – suddenly - everything changed.

If you were poised to be the biggest car company in the world raking in annual profits of £5bn, you think you'd feel pretty confident about yourself.

Even if you felt a little insecure, a cool £1.5bn advertising budget could iron out some of the less-than-savoury aspects of your appearance. Besides, £1.5bn buys a lot of botox.

The Dark Side of Volkswagen

The Volkswagen Group is the largest car maker in Europe. It has repeatedly claimed that it wants to be a ‘green’ company, but has so far failed to live up to its green ambitions. It has been slow to make its fleet more efficient, despite having developed the technology to do so, and has actively worked to impede strong European climate policies.

VW takes three months to reply. But says nothing.

Volkswagen is lobbying against critical environmental laws

After three months of our campaign to turn VW away from the Dark Side, millions of views to our campaign film and over 440,000 Jedi emails and phone calls later, Volkswagen have finally responded to us with a letter.
