1 EXT. THE CEMETERY - AFTERNOON
Late afternoon. The golden afternoon sunlight plays on the crosses of
the tombs.
An emaciated man walks along the winding path that crosses the
cemetery with his head down.
Large, imposing tombs can be seen among lesser and simpler ones.
Some of the latter are just shapeless and crumbling mounds of sand.
Burning incense sticks add an air of dark horror to the cemetery.
THE MAN
(mumbling)
To each his own fate? As for me, I
must have been born under an
unlucky star.
2 INT. THE CLASSROOM – MORNING (FLASHBACK)
THE MAN is wearing a white shirt, black pants, and shiny shoes. He is
a literature instructor standing on the teacher's platform of a classroom.
The students are listening attentively to him. On the blackboard is
written: "The Story of Kiều". Chalked on the blackboard are the
following verses: "If your fate is to be adrift, resign yourself to it / if your
fate is to be noble, accept it"
THE MAN
Is it a man's fate or is it true
that man is but a victim of
society, of a political system?
What do you think?
