The water exists to carry the cleaning agent to the surface and rinse the dissolved organic material away — not to physically blast contamination from the shingle.
Why High Pressure Damages Shingles
Asphalt shingles are not solid. They consist of a fiberglass mat saturated with asphalt, topped with a layer of embedded ceramic granules and an adhesive tar strip on the underside. The granules serve three purposes: they protect the asphalt from UV degradation (the asphalt would harden and crack within years without them), they provide color, and they add fire resistance. The granules are pressed into the asphalt during manufacturing but are not chemically bonded — they are mechanically held in place by the asphalt's tackiness and the friction of adjacent granules.
When a 2,500–4,000 PSI water stream hits a shingle surface, it physically dislodges granules in the impact zone. Some come off immediately; others are loosened and wash off in the next rainfall. The shingle below the impact zone is now partially exposed asphalt with reduced UV protection, accelerating degradation over the following years. High pressure can also lift shingle edges from the adhesive tar strip below, creating channels for wind-driven rain to penetrate the underlayment and decking. How to Verify Your Specific Warranty
Every major shingle manufacturer maintains digital warranty documentation accessible through their website. To find your specific warranty terms, you'll need (1) the manufacturer name, (2) the product line (e.g., GAF Timberline HDZ, CertainTeed Landmark, Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration), and (3) ideally the installation date. The product line is typically listed on your closing documents from the home purchase, on the original roofing invoice, or by checking with the roofing contractor who installed it. If those records are missing, a roofing inspector can usually identify the shingle line from a few minutes on the roof.
Once you have the product line, visit the manufacturer's website (gaf.com, certainteed.com, owenscorning.com, atlasroofing.com) and search for "warranty," "limited warranty," or "maintenance and care guide" for your specific product. Within those documents, look for the terms "cleaning," "maintenance," "pressure," and "PSI." All four major manufacturers include these terms in their warranty documentation. Best practice is to clean from ground level using extension wands and telescoping poles — walking on shingles risks damage, particularly on hot Florida days when asphalt is soft.
