It usually starts as a faint shadow above the gutter — a darker tone running down a single shingle course. Within two summers the shadow becomes a stripe, then a sheet, and from the curb your roof looks ten years older than it is. That is not a coincidence: the spores are airborne, the climate is hospitable, and once one roof colonizes, the next ones in the prevailing wind follow within a season or two.
Gloeocapsa magma does more than look bad. Its dark sheath traps solar radiation, raising attic temperatures and cooling costs. As it feeds on the calcium carbonate filler in asphalt shingles, the granule bed weakens and loosens. Once granule loss accelerates, the shingle's UV protection thins, and the path to premature replacement is permanent. Aggressive pressure washing makes it worse — voiding the warranty, blasting the remaining granules into the gutters, and lifting nail heads. The only correct fix is the slow, chemistry-led one.

Gloeocapsa spreads via airborne spores, which is why neighboring roofs often develop streaks around the same time. It does not physically damage shingles immediately, but over years it accelerates granule loss and reduces roof reflectivity, increasing cooling costs.
