Coal ready to be returned to sender

BREAKING: More than 50 people have stopped a train carrying coal to Cottam power station and are now unloading its climate-wrecking cargo. The train, transporting around 1,500 tonnes of coal to be burned in the power station’s furnaces, was flagged down safely this afternoon as it approached the power station.

Activists block two major drilling rigs in 24 hours as ‘Save the Arctic’ campaign escalates

London, May 27th 2014 -- Greenpeace activists from 12 countries blocked two separate oil rigs destined to drill in the Arctic ocean in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The environmental group said that the threat to the rapidly melting Arctic from a group of international oil companies requires ‘a truly global response’.


A group of 30 activists in the Dutch port of IJmuiden occupied the GSP Saturn, a rig contracted by Russia’s state owned energy company Gazprom on its way to the remote Pechora sea. They were removed after five hours and six activists remain under arrest.

Another group of 15 is currently occupying the Transocean Spitsbergen, under contract to Norway’s state owned company Statoil as it prepares to drill the world’s northernmost well in the Barents Sea. Both Gazprom and Statoil’s projects are taking place deep inside the Arctic circle.

Com'on, Norman. Don't block the changes we urgently need.

When the alarm rang at 4.45am this morning, I was already awake. Nobody overslept or moaned about feeling tired. And after a quick pre-action breakfast we piled into the minibus, loaded with climbing equipment, a huge banner and our petition printed with the names of 20,000 UK campaign supporters. We were on route to Lewes, the constituency of UK Transport Minister, Norman Baker, who this Wednesday will represent the UK in a make-or-break moment for the future of pollution from cars.

Today, the world calls Shell

Oh to be a fly on the wall of a Shell boardroom this week! Activists all round the world have been taking action to #TellShell to get out of the Arctic. Despite Greenpeace Netherlands taking over Shell’s headquarters, Greenpeace UK activists shutting down 78 of the company’s petrol stations, Greenpeace France and Mexico occupying their offices, petrol station actions in Denmark, Finland, Hungary and the Czech Republic and Greenpeace Argentina sending 35 climbers to shut down its refinery outside of Argentina, Shell still hasn’t got the message.
