Last month we found out that the government is cooking up plans to strip homeowners and tenants of their legal right to deny permission to companies that want to frack directly underneath their property. If every English person’s home is their castle, then government ministers are currently digging a tunnel underneath the ramparts to let the frackers in.

We've heard from an inside source that Angela Merkel the German Chancellor called Prime Minister David Cameron last night in a bid to block a critical law to make cleaner European cars. Ministers were supposed to agree the law today.

Is this really the 'greenest government ever'?

Is it really a year since David Cameron, newly ensconced as prime minister, assured us that the coalition would be the "greenest government ever"? It's an anniversary worth remembering, if only to consider how, in environmental terms, Cameron's government seems stuck in reverse.
