Tuesday 20th June 2006: Today Greenpeace launches a public information campaign to promote a new approach to tackling climate change and energy security that would dramatically cut energy waste in power stations, slash CO2 emissions and close the looming 'energy gap'.

Summary

In May 2006, CoRWM released its draft recommendations (PDF) on the management of radioactive wastes. The committee, which was set up by the government to find a long-term management plan for nuclear waste, concluded that the best available approach is "geological disposal" - more commonly called deep dumping.

It takes over a million years for nuclear waste to become safe, (a time span equivalent to the evolution of modern man). Yet one man is set to make a decision that will increase lethal waste levels threefold. Is this the sort of legacy Tony Blair wants to leave mankind? We think not.

A terrorist attack on a train carrying waste nuclear materials across Britain could spread lethal radioactivity across an area of 100 sq kilometres, and result in the deaths of up to 8000 people.

Spent nuclear fuel is routinely transported by train from nine nuclear power stations around the country for reprocessing or storage at Sellafield in Cumbria. Typically these journeys take place once a week from each reactor - at the same time and on the same lines as regular passenger and freight trains.

This review examines the hazards, risk and potential consequences associated with the transport movements of irradiated (spent) nuclear fuel in the United Kingdom. It identifies potential accidents and malevolent acts that could severely damage a spent fuel transportation flask, thereby enabling the release of radioactivity, in the form of particles and aerosols, and the corresponding health risk imposed on unprotected members of public.

Estimates of radiation doses to the public in the future, from the release of radioactive materials from the Drigg nuclear dump site, could reach up to 30 times than the legal maximum permissible now! Moreover, Drigg, the UK's main low-level waste dump is likely to be destroyed by coastal erosion in 500 years.
