Nine Greenpeace activists arrested in protests at both ends of the failed Star Wars test

Following today's failed missile test launch Greenpeace has repeated its call for President Clinton to reject plans for a new "Star Wars" missile defence system.

Initial reports stated that the anti-missile weapon failed to intercept a Minuteman II rocket over the Pacific Ocean. Two of the three tests of the system have now failed.

"The failed test just emphasises what a failure in judgement the whole Star Wars programme is," said Greenpeace nuclear disarmament campaigner, William Peden.

The international anti-nuclear organisation, Greenpeace has just announced a team of activists has entered Vandenberg Air Force base where the Pentagon is scheduled to test its proposed Star Wars missile system later today. The activists, moving on foot, entered the base near the launch pad for a Minuteman II, scheduled for blast off at 19:01 this evening.

With people in this part of the base the missile cannot be launched. Equipped with survival gear and supplies for several days, they intend to stay inside the area as long as possible.

July 5, Toyama, Japan. Following three days of dramatic high - seas actions and an overnight occupation of a ship laden with Russian logs, six Greenpeace activists decided to relase their chains and return to their action ship, the Rainbow Warrior. The activists stated that they had succeeded in pointing a spotlight on an ignored international crisis and were now going to take their protest to a higher level - the Ministers and Heads of State of the G8 countries.

Greenpeace launches international campaign against U.S 'Star Wars' missile system

Greenpeace today launched an international campaign against U.S plans to develop a 'Star Wars' anti ballistic missile (AMB) system. A test of the system is expected to take place this coming Friday ( 4am Saturday GMT) off the Californian coast.

Greenpeace brands criminal Amazon Rainforest timber in Denmark

Tuesday 4 June. Eight Greenpeace activists entered Aarhus harbour to reveal the import of 112 pallets of Amazonian plywood to Denmark. The activists stamped the plywood with a message 'Protect the Amazon - Stop Criminal Timber Imports' to highlight the fact that Denmark imports Amazonian wood from companies involved in illegal logging.

Japan and East Caribbean Nations block whale sanctuary vote

Adelaide July 2000. The proposal by the governments of Australia and New Zealand to establish a South Pacific Whale Sanctuary failed today at the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting in Adelaide, Australia.

Despite the proposal's defeat Greenpeace is encouraged by the strong support for the South Pacific Whale Sanctuary this year and welcomes the continued support of the governments of Australia and New Zealand to return with the proposal at next year's IWC meeting.

Greenpeace volunteers invade Tilbury Docks to brand rainforest timber as criminal

At 5.20am this morning 30 Greenpeace volunteers entered London's Tilbury Docks and painted a warning for UK buyers on pallets of criminal timber from the Amazon rainforest.

The Amazonian plywood came from the MV Enif, which Greenpeace volunteers occupied for more than 75 hours a fortnight ago, to prevent it unloading at Tilbury Docks.

Greenpeace today attacked the government's newly released strategy on radioactive substances as an outrage.


"This announcement is pure spin" said Greenpeace nuclear campaigner, Pete Roche, he continued

"The government are saying that they are achieving 'major cuts' in radioactive discharges when in fact what they are doing is failing to meet the commitments they made to the international community to reduce radioactive discharges"

27 June 4am, Final Outcome. At 4am the German police removed the last climber from the MV Enif. No arrests were made and everyone was released.
The seven 40ft containers (112 pallets) of Amaplac plywood are not destined for the German market and is due to be transporte to a small town in Denmark.

Hamburg 26 June 2000 - Greenpeace volunteers have for the second time stopped a shipment of Amazon timber on board the MV Enif.

Eight out of ten people who live in the European countries which have spent nuclear fuel reprocessing contracts with Sellafield (United Kingdom) or La Hague (France) say they want the discharges of radioactive waste into the sea to be stopped and prohibited, according to a series of opinion polls commissioned by Greenpeace.
