A penguin stands in front of a camera during Greenpeace's tour in the Southern Ocean
Today is World
Penguin Day, what a good excuse to dig out all those cute, funny and sometimes thought-provoking photos of my favourite bird! The awareness day promotes the conservation of these amazing creatures and coincides with the northward migration of adelie penguins and their return to Antarctica after months spent at sea.

It’s decision time today for the future of
the giant mammal as a U.N. top court rules whether Japan has the right to hunt
whales in the Antarctic. Australia has asked the International Court of Justice
to stop Japan’s whale hunt claiming their program is not scientific but commercial,
because of its large scale.

Coal barges come down the Mahakam river in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo
It’s World
Water Day on Saturday and this year’s theme highlights the facts that water is needed to

Orangutans at a feeding station run by Orangutan Foundation International
Who would think that when you are trying to
get rid off your dandruff you could be eliminating the orangutans and tigers
too? When I look at these images of forest destruction and biodiversity I’m
once again reminded that even your shampoo could harbor a dirty secret.

Hiroshi Kanno, a vegetable farmer evacuated from Iitate village harvests carrots at his new farm
I can’t believe it’s already three years
since the Fukushima disaster struck. Thousands of people were forced to flee their homes and had to rebuild their lives
elsewhere, because of the high levels of radiaition. Japanese photographer Noriko Hayashi documents the struggle of some of the victims, who feel the government has abandoned them.

A worker screens a pattern onto children's wear in Huzhou, China
When I look at these shockingly colourful pictures of clothes manufacturing in China, it is a
stark reminder that you don’t always know the full story behind the production of your kid's garments.

Phil, Alex and Kieron arrive at St Pancras station
Captain Pete Willcox is home, and the rest of the non-Russians in the Arctic 30 are either home as well or on their way. There have been some amazing scenes on their arrival home - here are a few of my favourite photos from the last two days.

Local farmer Hu Shan pulls up a dead yang chai bush near Shenhua's Number 8 water well
We’ve had a fantastic, hot summer this year, cooling down with a drink of water whenever needed.
So when I look at Bo Qiu’s photo feature of
water shortages in Inner Mongolia it is a strong reminder that easy access to
clean water is not a given for everyone.
