Imagine a world without fish...

Posted by jossc — 13 May 2009 at 3:59pm - Comments

Hot on the heels of The Age of Stupid comes The End of the Line, a disturbing and powerful film about one of the world's most shockingly ignored problems - overfishing.

For centuries people have viewed the seas as an unlimited resource which can be tapped into at will, and one that will rapidly replenish itself regardless of how much we take from it. But the more we learn about what's happening in our oceans, the more we realise that this is no longer true, if it ever was.

Justice for the Toyko Two

Last edited 27 March 2009 at 1:09pm

Archive content: this is the story of the Tokyo Two. Junichi and Toru have now been tried, found guilty and given one-year suspended sentences. Greenpeace will fight until this unjust conviction is overturned. You can help by writing to Japan's Foreign Minister and demanding justice.

Video: Whaling on trial - the story of the Toyko Two

There has been an international ban on commercial whaling for over 20 years now. Yet throughout, the Japanese government has continued to hunt whales in the Southern Ocean – supposedly a whale sanctuary – under the guise of conducting 'scientific research'. But despite killing thousands of whales since the ban began, they've made no useful scientific discoveries.

Tata's turtles

Posted by jossc — 20 March 2009 at 6:10pm - Comments

Sea turtles have been nesting at Gahirmatha on the Orissa coast of India for hundreds, possibly thousands of years. But if we don't act now, we could see this change within a decade – an eye blink in geological timescales.

A new port being built at Dhamra, near Gahirmatha, will push the endangered olive ridley sea turtle closer to the slippery edge of extinction. The main threat to the turtles is posed by dredging to make a channel deep enough for large ships to anchor.
