Expand/CollapseBIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Samuel Benedict Reed was born in Arlington, Virginia on November 18, 1818. He is best known for his prominent work as a civil engineer in the 1800s. In 1841, he began work as an engineer on the Erie Canal and then worked for the Rock Island Railroad building a line from Michigan to Joliet, Illinois. His involvement on these early engineering projects led to his major role on a line of pioneer railroads across the great western plains and over the Rocky Mountains, where he helped lay the last rail that united the Union and Central Pacific railroads at Promontory Point on May 10, 1869. This completing the first railroad from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. He died on December 25, 1891 in Pasadena, California.

Jane Earl Reed, sometimes called Jennie, married Samuel Benedict Reed in 1855 in Genesco, Illinois. Samuel and Jane had three daughters: Mary Boyle Reed, Anna Earl Reed and Jane (Jennie) Earl Reed. Jane spent most of her life raising her family in Joliet, Illinois while Samuel Reed traveled throughout the country. She died on August 10, 1896.

Mary Boyle Reed married Louis Howard Hyde on June 20, 1889. Louis was born to George Warren and Mary Amanda Howard Hyde on June 29, 1860. Louis Hyde went to school in Ann Arbor, Michigan and was proprietor of the Pipestone Flour Mills in Pipestone, Minnesota in the early 1900s. He traveled extensively and spent nearly two years in Australia. He died on April 8, 1923. Mary B. Reed Hyde died on December 21, 1932.

The children of Louis and Mary Hyde included Arthur Dwight Hyde, Louise Hyde MacNair, Jane Hyde Hoyt, Howard Earl Hyde, and Reed Warren Hyde.

Arthur D. Hyde worked at General Mills from 1928 to 1961, resigning as an executive vice president. From 1961 to 1968 he was president of A. O. Smith Harvestore Products, Inc. Arthur died in Owatonna, Minnesota in 1990.
