This Friday: Rally Against Fracking in Ryedale, Yorkshire

On Friday 20 May, North Yorkshire County Council will be deciding whether to approve fracking firm Third Energy's bid to drill in Ryedale, Yorkshire. With days to go before the council decision is made, people us from across Yorkshire - and around the UK - will gather for a rally outside county hall in Northallerton.

After Lancashire County Council unexpectedly rejected Cuadrilla’s application to frack at Preston New Road on Monday, I wanted to hear a bit more of the story from someone at the frontline of this monumental decision. Bob Dennett is a co-founder of Frack Free Lancashire. He told me a bit about the story that led to Monday’s campaign win, and the fight that still lies ahead.

Cuadrilla's defeat a Waterloo for fracking industry - Greenpeace

Commenting on today's decision by Lancashire County Council to turn down Cuadrilla's application to frack at a second site in the region, Greenpeace UK energy and climate campaignre Daisy Sands said:

“This decision is a Waterloo for the fracking industry and a triumph for local democracy. It's also a huge boost for efforts to kick the UK’s addiction to dangerous fossil fuels. Lancashire councillors deserve huge praise for standing up to the relentless pressure from the fracking lobby and their minister friends. Their decision sends a powerful signal to other councils that the fracking juggernaut can indeed be stopped.

Local protests at Preston Town Hall earlier this week

As I write this, the Lancashire County Council planning committee charged with approving or rejecting Cuadrilla’s applications to frack for shale gas in the county, is at a stalemate. With seven members of its fifteen moving to approve the application at Preston New Road, seven standing to reject it, and one councillor abstaining, the vote - which was expected to be decided on Wednesday - has been delayed until Monday.

Michael & Emily Eavis pledge to keep Glastonbury site Frack-free

Worthy farm, Pilton, Somerset. Today Michael and Emily Eavis, whose dairy farm has been hosting Britain’s biggest and best party for over forty years, announced that the site of Glastonbury Festival will never be fracked, and Worthy Farm is officially Not For Shale!

Executive Director of Greenpeace UK, John Sauven welcomed the news –

“We salute Michael and Emily’s determination to combine good times with good deeds, to protect a site which means so much to so many people, and keep it Frack-free and Not For Shale.”

Both Emily and Michael signed a declaration which read –

I (Emily/Michael Eavis), resident at Worthy Farm, Pilton, give my word that I will not allow Fracking to take place on this site.
