Thanks to the generosity of our supporters Greenpeace is able to take on some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. From tackling industrial fishing in the Arctic, to stopping deforestation in the Amazon, it is our supporters that make Greenpeace what it is today.

You can read a summary of some of what we achieved together in 2016 in our Impact Report. I hope you enjoy reading about how we use our investigations, research, lobbying and actions to achieve real change.

Our global impact

The environmental problems we’re facing are global in nature; the world's atmosphere, oceans, ancient forests and biodiversity are global commons, and their destruction affects the world as a whole. We believe that our work to defend the natural world and promote peace needs to happen globally, across regional and national borders.

An international organisation


Greenpeace is an international organisation: we have 28 national and regional offices around the world, providing a presence in over 40 countries, as well as an international office in Amsterdam. National and regional offices (like Greenpeace UK) work within their own local countries to carry out jointly agreed global campaign strategies, which are coordinated by Greenpeace International to make sure we have a truly global impact. Read more.

We are passionate about protecting the Earth – the only life support system we have. We are independent. That means we can tackle power, not problems. We do this by investigating, documenting and exposing the causes of environmental destruction. We work to bring about change through political lobbying, citizen action and consumer pressure. And we will take peaceful direct action to protect this fragile planet and promote the solutions for a green and peaceful future.

Greenpeace was founded by a small group of activists in 1971. Today, we have a presence in more than 40 countries. While the size of the organisation may have changed, our commitment to defending the planet and promoting peace, to achieving positive change through action, and to realising our vision of a green and peaceful world is as strong as ever.
