I am fascinated by chimpanzees, these most human-like mammals that nurse their babies until they are three years old, use simple tools like twigs to poke into ant nests and noisily communicate with the rest of their troop.

Normally you associate Thailand’s beaches and holiday resorts with emerald water and white sands, but on Saturday morning 50,000 litres of crude oil spilled from a leak in a pipeline into the Gulf of Thailand, off Rayong province.

Sitting in my comfortable office chair and watching these terrible images come through the picture desk, I feel a desperate need to stop this destruction. The devastating forest fires that swept through Sumatra recently caused record breaking air pollution in parts of Malaysia and Singapore.

Slideshow: the end of the Rainbow... for now

Yesterday's handover ceremony for the Rainbow Warrior II was an emotional affair. As you can see from the images above, one or two tears were shed as she was handed over to her new owners.

With the Rainbow Warrior II renamed Rongdhonu and sailing off for a new career as a medical vessel, the launch of her replacement - Rainbow Warrior III - is imminent. We're still raising funds for our new vessel so please make a donation to keep a rainbow campaigning on the ocean waves.

Paula settles into her new home

Thanks to your generous support, we have been successful in our mission to give Paula a new home after leaving the National Theatre. She has just arrived in her new home and has been busy meeting the locals and finding her way around, before she embarks on an intensive training course to bring her up to speed on our climate campaign.
