LUXEMBOURG: Greenpeace activists will today (24th October) send a clear message to EU agriculture and development ministers meeting in Luxembourg and Leeds (UK): that unless they prohibit illegal timber imports to the EU and support sustainable forest management globally, their efforts to stop illegal logging will not end rainforest destruction in the poorest regions of the world. Farm Ministers are due to reach a political agreement on voluntary measures to combat illegal logging and support forest governance reform in timber-producing countries [1].

Flagship Government offices were today (19th October) blockaded by Greenpeace in protest at the tonnes of illegal timber from the world's last rainforests that continues to flood into the UK.

The Government has known about the illegal trade for years, yet has failed to do anything to stop illegal timber entering the UK.

Following a Greenpeace investigation, the environmental organisation today urged the Royal Family to launch an enquiry over "green" procurement guidelines for their buildings. The call follows revelations that the Queens Gallery in Buckingham Palace, re-opened as part of the Jubilee celebrations, has been renovated with wood from Africa's last remaining rainforests and the Brazilian Amazon.

Help to stop the trade in illegal mahogany

The Government goes to the High Court at 10.30am tomorrow, Thursday 30th May to defend itself against a legal challenge by Greenpeace over its failure to prevent illegal mahogany from the Brazilian Amazon rainforest being imported into the UK (1).

The court case is the latest development in Greenpeace's campaign to end imports of illegally and destructively logged timber into the UK from the world's last remaining ancient forests. Currently around 60% of Britain's imports of tropical rainforest wood come from illegal sources.

Mahogany report UK summary

On-the-ground investigations by Greenpeace in the Brazilian Amazon have documented damning new evidence of the truth behind the glamorous image of mahogany. Two mahogany kings now largely control the illegal mahogany trade in Pará State the major point of export for mahogany in Brazil. Moisés Carvalho Pereira and Osmar Alves Ferreira are ruthless and corrupt. More than 70% of the direct exports of mahogany from Pará to the UK came through companies connected to these two kings...
