Ignoring the wishes of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), the international body which regulates whaling, the Fisheries Agency of Japan have sent a whaling fleet into the North Pacific to take a self allocated quota of 160 sperm, Bryde's and minke whales. This is the second expanded "scientific" hunt in the North Pacific since the IWC met in July 2000.

Two Greenpeace volunteers were arrested today at the US missile test range at Kwajalein in the Pacific Marshall Islands. The volunteers were protesting against President Bush's missile defence programme, known as "Star Wars", on the first day of a US diplomatic 'charm offensive' to sell the idea to the UK and other countries.

Mori poll shows that Eastern Caribbean public supports South Pacific Whale Sanctuary

As Greenpeace ship, the Arctic Sunrise, starts a tour of the Caribbean, the results of a MORI poll (1) reveals that people in the Eastern Caribbean support the creation of a South Pacific Whale Sanctuary (SPWS) by a margin of four to one.

People living in the six Caribbean countries (2) that are members of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) were asked whether or not those countries should support the establishment of a SPWS. Over half (54%) of the public across the six countries support the Sanctuary, and only 13% oppose it.

Greenpeace sets up camp near missile site

Greenpeace establish observation post near Star Wars Pacific test site

69% percent of Labour supporters polled are opposed to the deployment of the US missile defence project, known as "Star Wars", according to a new public opinion poll released today by Greenpeace UK (1).

The poll, of 2,166 people, conducted by YouGov.com, was released as Greenpeace this morning established an observation post near the US missile test site at Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific. The Greenpeace flagship the Rainbow Warrior is also in the area. The US is shortly expected to conduct the latest in a series of tests where they will attempt to shoot down a missile fired at Kwajalein from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Shareholders vote against BP on effect of climate change on investments

BP must take heed of a significant vote at its Annual General Meeting today on a Greenpeace resolution calling for the company to take seriously the threats of climate change on fossil fuel investments and protect its shareholders financial future earnings by investing in renewable energy.

Today's initial proxy vote, displayed at the meeting today, showed 919 million shares, or 7.4 per cent of the vote, in favour of the resolution. Votes of the shareholders attending today's meeting have yet to be counted.
