In a big boost to our 'sustainable seafood' campaign Sainsbury's, the largest fishmonger in the UK, has announced that from the end of April it will sell only line-caught fresh cod and haddock to its 16 million customers.

Commenting on the publication of today's Marine Bill White Paper, Willie Mackenzie, oceans campaigner for Greenpeace, said:
"After climate change, protecting the oceans is one of the greatest environmental challenges, and the Government admits this. But there’s simply too many 'coulds' and not enough 'wills' in this white paper.

On Monday we staged a 'funeral' for the 'last cod' at the Defra (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs) office in Westminster. This was to coincide with the EU Environment Council meeting where our minister Ben Bradshaw, together with his European counterparts, was again failing to protect our oceans.

Greenpeace calls on Government to act on sound scientific advice
Greenpeace today called for Fisheries Minister Ben Bradshaw not to cave in to fishing industry pressure and heed calls from scientists to grant zero quotas for cod fishing next year. The International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES) today advised that all cod fishing should be halted in the North Sea, Irish Sea and west of Scotland as stocks are well below recommended levels.
