Air Pollution

Stop climate change

Last edited 8 May 2017 at 12:25pm

Climate change isn't inevitable. We have the knowledge, skills and technologies to get ourselves out of this difficult situation. All over the world people have woken up to the threat, and are working to reduce the use of fossil fuels, stop rainforest destruction and get power from clean energy. Still much more needs to be done.

We’ve all heard the stats by now: Air pollution is terrible for our health and is linked to strokes, heart disease and diabetes in adults. Children are particularly at risk of lung diseases like asthma and more than 1,000 nurseries across the UK are close to roads with illegal levels of air pollution. Diesel cars emit 10 times more harmful fumes than trucks or buses.

Nearly half of the key marginal seats in the 2017 general election are in areas affected by illegal levels of roadside air pollution, an analysis by the Greenpeace investigations unit has found.

51 of the 111 seats where the Conservatives, Labour or Liberal Democrats came a close second in the last election breach legal limits for nitrogen dioxide air pollution according to an analysis of government data [1].

Theresa May's half-baked air pollution plan puts poll ratings before people's health

Commenting on the UK government plan to tackle air pollution, published for consultation today, Greenpeace UK's chief scientist Dr Doug Parr said:

"We have heard a lot about 'strong and stable leadership' from Theresa May, but there's none of it in a half-baked plan that puts poll ratings before people's health. This hodge-podge of vague proposals offers little help and no justice to drivers duped by car companies and people breathing toxic air pollution. The only real winners are the car makers who despite misleading customers about their cars' real emissions and causing this mess in the first place are getting off scot-free.

What pops into your head if I suggested you buy an electric car? For most people, it conjures up a host of stereotypes.
