Government “trying to pull a fast one” on fracking in National Parks

Last edited 15 December 2015 at 4:08pm

MPs are expected to vote tomorrow on the Government’s plan to U-turn on its pledge of an ‘outright ban’ on fracking in National Parks and other protected areas.

The vote on the Government’s Draft Onshore Hydraulic Fracturing (Protected Areas) Regulations 2015 could see fracking allowed beneath National Parks, Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), Groundwater Protection Zones, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) and World Heritage sites. This could expose many of the UK’s most fragile and treasured landscapes to noise, air and light pollution, resulting from fracking rigs being situated around the edges of protected areas, in order to drill down and then horizontally across to access the shale gas reserves beneath.

A loop hole in the Energy Bill could see the return of coal-fired power stations

The government's flagship attempt to reform where our electricity comes from prioritises expensive gas and nuclear over renewable energy, doesn’t even mention money saving energy efficiency and is so complicated that even the energy utilities don't understand it.

Climate change isn't inevitable. We have the knowledge, skills and technologies to get ourselves out of this difficult situation. All over the world people have woken up to the threat, and are working to reduce the use of fossil fuels, stop rainforest destruction and get power from clean energy. Still much more needs to be done.

  1. Evidence uncovered of potential preparation for ‘asset stripping’ of GIB will add to concern around the deal from former ministers Greg Barker and Vince Cable and business figures such as Richard Branson.
  2. Macquarie preferred bidder despite track record of UK ‘asset stripping’ activity linked to other UK infrastructure acquisitions including M6 and Thames Water.
  3. Green groups add voice to calls on Government for sale to Macquarie to be stopped.

An investigation has uncovered a process within the Green Investment Bank (GIB) establishing corporate structures commonly used in preparations for ‘asset-stripping’, ahead of its purchase by controversial Australian bank Macquarie from the UK Government for an estimated £2bn.

The government is set to knock solar power yet again with planned business rate hikes of up to 8 times what they currently are.

Public sector organisations such as schools and businesses who have invested in solar panels, will be affected by unexpected tax hikes. The industry fears that people will be deterred from installing solar panels in the future.

David Cameron may be gone but he still has a legacy - the Conservative Manifesto. It might not sound the most fun, but the pledges that the Conservatives made in the 2015 General Election still govern and guide their policies today, even with Theresa May now in charge.

Here are 5 key pledges the Government made in 2015 that they must remember and deliver on now:<--break-><--break->
