GM jury calls for 'moratorium' on crops

Last edited 8 September 2003 at 8:00am

Two 'citizen's juries' today handed down their verdict on GM crops - and both agreed the 'moratorium' on commercialisation in the UK should be continued.

Two independent juries were held simultaneously, in Newcastle upon Tyne and St Albans. The members of the public who volunteered to take part in the GM Jury project heard evidence from a wide selection of expert witnesses over a six week period.

Public disquiet surrounding GM food is revealed in the GM Jury's report, published on September 8th.

A diverse group of people agreed to take part in an independent 'citizens' jury' on GM.

The GM Jury project was designed to help shape the Government's decision over the commercialisation of GM crops in the UK. The Government's GM Public Debate has been widely criticised for its lack of public involvement.

GM sneaking back into our food

Last edited 23 July 2003 at 8:00am

Our new online Shopper's Guide to genetically modified (GM) food shows that despite a consumer backlash, the controversial technology is slipping into our shopping trolleys.

GM is sneaking through the back door via animal feed. This encourages the growing of contaminating GM crops, even though consumers have rejected GM ingredients. Most of the major retailers promised the public they would remove food containing GM ingredients from their shelves, but almost all of them are failing to tackle the GManimal feed issue.

Let the polling begin!

The Government's great GM public debate has begun. If you haven't heard about it, worry not - few people have.

To help the Government spread the word, and really listen to public opinion, Greenpeace supporters are launching "GM-o-Meter" polls throughout the country.

We've already done some polling outside the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in London. The FSA, our supposedly independent food watchdog, is well known for its anti-organic and pro-GM stance.

Summary
In spring 1999, following widespread calls for a halt to the development of genetically modified (GM) crops in the UK, the Government launched a four-year programme of farm scale trials.
In this briefing document, Greenpeace examines what the trials are likely to miss - and what they are putting at risk.

Public debate: Why we oppose GM crops

Oil seed rape

Oil seed rape

GM crops pose unpredictable and irreversible long-term risks to environmental and human health.

GM crops are new life forms that have never occurred in nature, created by a technique that allows scientists to insert foreign genes into random positions in the DNA of a host.

Why the GM Public Debate was flawed

GM corn

GM corn

Greenpeace campaigns against the release of genetically modified organism (GMOs) to protect the environment, our food and farming communities. We oppose the release of genetically modified crops into the UK.

We believe the Government's GM Public Debate process was severly flawed.

Conclusion: Wrong questions, wrong time, just wrong
