GM quarantine in Romania

A Greenpeace volunteer sprays a car leaving Braila island, Romania

How's this for a creative and exciting example of direct action - it's a blockade but with a difference. Earlier this morning in Romania, Greenpeace volunteers quarantined a whole island where GM soya crops are being grown, which is illegal under EU law. Vehicles leaving Braila island were hosed down by people wearing white biohazard suits to prevent genetic contamination spreading to the mainland. Even a donkey and cart were washed and made GM-free!

Oil seed rape

Oil seed rape

Today the government published the second set of results from the GM Farm Scale Evaluations (FSE) of Winter-Sown Oilseed Rape in the UK. The four-year study showed that compared to non-GM fields, growing GM Winter-Sown Oilseed Rape results in fewer numbers of broad-leaved weed seeds, which are a major source of food for farmland birds, half as many bees and two-thirds fewer butterflies.

In a major blow to the future of genetically modified (GM) crops in the developing world, GM company Bayer has announced that it has stopped all its work on creating new GM crops in India. In a letter to Greenpeace, Bayer claims that the decision to stop GM research was "due to changes in our global research strategy," and concedes that all work on GM cabbage, cauliflower, aubergine, tomato and mustard seed has stopped. The company will now only concentrate on conventional plant breeding.

Brussels On the same day that French newspaper Le Monde reveals confidential expert opinion that raises doubts about the safety of a genetically modified (GM) maize recently cleared by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Greenpeace has released a report criticising the new EU GMO evaluation procedures. The environmental group today urges European Agriculture Ministers to reject a Commission proposal to allow the import and marketing of a GM sweet corn for human consumption.
