Tory energy manifesto a recipe for higher bills - Greenpeace

Commenting on the Conservative election manifesto published today, Greenpeace UK chief scientist Dr Doug Parr said:

"The Tory manifesto pledge on energy is a recipe for higher consumer bills. Onshore wind is the cheapest form of low-carbon power. Stopping it whilst also committing to cutting carbon emissions only means we'll have to invest in more expensive sources of clean energy, driving up bills. The Tories' double standards and ideological bias are embarrassingly obvious. They'll champion localism when it comes to wind farms, but they'll run roughshod over local people's concerns when it's about fracking."

UK climate activists block 1,500-tonne coal train as major summit begins

Fifty climate change activists have stopped and occupied a freight train delivering 1,500 tonnes of coal to one of Britain’s most polluting power stations, as David Cameron prepares to speak at a high-profile climate summit in New York today.

The activists used industry-standard emergency signals to flag down the 400-metre-long coal train as it was slowing down along rail sidings leading to Cottam power station in Nottinghamshire. The main coal supply route to the plant, which is run by French energy giant EDF, has now been cut off.

Dozens of fully-trained Greenpeace activists have climbed onto the open coal wagons, and have started unloading the train’s climate-damaging cargo. They are carrying enough food and water supplies to occupy the train for the duration of today’s climate summit.

Last month we found out that the government is cooking up plans to strip homeowners and tenants of their legal right to deny permission to companies that want to frack directly underneath their property. If every English person’s home is their castle, then government ministers are currently digging a tunnel underneath the ramparts to let the frackers in.

You want it? You got it..

We've heard from an inside source that Angela Merkel the German Chancellor called Prime Minister David Cameron last night in a bid to block a critical law to make cleaner European cars. Ministers were supposed to agree the law today.

The Cabinet reshuffle could unleash an unprecedented assault on our environment. It’s time mainstream politicians put their differences aside and worked together to stop George Osborne.

Prime Minister's speech – Greenpeace responds

Responding to the Prime Minister's speech today, Greenpeace's chief policy adviser Ruth Davis, said:

"The Prime Minister's speech today suggests he has completely outsourced the task of tackling climate change and supporting Britain's green businesses to his Liberal Democrat colleagues.

It is now vital for the Conservative's green credentials that in the coming weeks David Cameron stands up to his party's Tea Party tendency and reasserts his personal commitment to protecting the environment and creating green jobs.
