EU regulation would outlaw imports of illegally logged timber

Environmental groups including Greenpeace and WWF today presented a draft regulation to the EU that would outlaw illegal wood imports into the UK and Europe and promote sustainable forest management worldwide. The groups are calling for the regulation to become law. One hundred and sixty other global social and environmental organisations back the call for legislation.

Greenpeace urges boycott of Danzer Group

Greenpeace are urging UK timber importers to boycott the Swiss-German Danzer Group. The call follows investigations which found that Danzer are involved in bribery, corruption, illegal logging, suspected forgery of official documents and carrying out business dealings with an arms trafficker, blacklisted by the UN Security Council (UNSC).

Renowned architectural commentator & TV presenter Kevin McCloud backs Greenpeace Guide

On Monday (29th November) Greenpeace will launch a unique multimedia CD-ROM, 'How to Specify Good Wood.' Aimed at UK architects, specifiers and contractors the RIBA approved CD-ROM provides a step by step guide to ensuring that wood used on construction projects comes from legal and sustainable sources. It will be distributed to 30,000 architectural practices, construction companies and local authorities around the UK.

They are also living giants, vast natural edifices which we can admire for their longevity, poise, scale and beauty. Who doesn't recoil at the terrifying fact that simply vast areas of forest are being removed from the planet every year?

Greenpeace today (1st November 2004) enthusiastically welcomed the signing of two official decrees by Brazilian President, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, creating extractive reserves (RESEX) in the Brazilian Amazon.

THE PLAYFAIR PROJECT in Edinburgh and the North Edinburgh Arts Centre were today declared 'Forest Crime Scenes' by Greenpeace for using timber from the endangered rainforests of South East Asia and Africa in recent construction work, which was funded with over £10million of National Lottery money.

Asda, Marks and Spencer and John Lewis' garden furniture pushing orang-utans towards extinction

GARDEN FURNITURE SOLD by Asda, Marks and Spencer and John Lewis is made from trashed rainforest timber and is responsible for pushing endangered animals such as the orang-utan further towards extinction, according to Greenpeace today (29 May 2004).
