Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The majority of the materials detail his work with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Emergency Conservation Work (ECW) programs. Included are daily reports by rangers Beatty (1911-1917) and Fred W. Bessette (1912-1914) detailing forestry work, primarily in the Orr, Minnesota area; a descriptive list of the 62 CCC companies operating in Minnesota (October 22, 1934); notepads kept by Beatty documenting his daily activities and travel and personnel at the various CCC/ECW camps (undated, 1935, 1941); an article by Beatty describing ECW projects in the state's forests during 1933 through 1936; and CCC photographs (1938-1940).

The CCC photographs are mostly identified, dated, and mounted on album pages compiled by or for Beatty. They show CCC camps, including S-81 at Kabetogama, S-95, S-97, Big Falls, Cusson, and Side Lake; personnel; equipment; buildings, particularly lookout towers, forestry stations, and the central office complex in Grand Rapids; general landscaping and improvement work done at picnic areas, campgrounds, and lakeshores in the state forests; conservation dams built on public lakes and streams, including the Kettle Falls Dam; and a variety of other CCC/ECW activities such as winter logging, snow plowing, and firefighting and prevention. Several photographs of Beatty are included. A photograph album also includes photographs of Beatty and fellow forest rangers, patrolmen, and their families participating in forest rangers' meetings, classes, and reunions. Locations include Ash Lake, Badura Nursery, Crane Lake, Elbow Lake, Ely Lake, Highway 23 before and during construction, Kabetogama lookout tower and ranger station, Loon Lake, Nett Lake, Orr ranger station, and Trout Lake hunting camp.
