Trying to solve the climate crisis with a fistful of pennies?

All eyes were glued to the TV in the office this lunchtime to see whether Alistair Darling's budget would deliver the kind of changes we need to see if we want to give ourselves the chance to keep the lid on climate change.

Aboard the Second Life ship, the DoveAboard the Second Life ship, the Dove If you don't have any plans this Sunday and would like to hang out with some fellow eco-minded people, come along to the Earth Week event being held on the Greenpeace ship in the virtual world of Second Life.

There's a whole week of happenings to commerorate Earth Day and the Second Life Greenpeace supporter group will be celebrating the many successes we've had over the years, which (as with our new Inspiring Action video) will be helping to recruit new climate activists.

Drop by anytime between 6 and 9pm BST on Sunday 26 April (that's 10am to 1pm Second Life time) - just click this link to be taken to the embarkation point if you already have Second Life set up. I'll be there, trying to make sure I don't look like a complete newbie so come and say hello!

Become a climate activist on Earth Day

Posted by jamie — 21 April 2009 at 12:55pm - Comments

Tomorrow is Earth Day, although over on the international dateline in the Pacific it's already Wednesday 22 April so we're launching our new video now. It's called Inspiring Action and hopefully that's just what it will do - we want to turn 3 million people into climate activists, starting with you.

Join us now, and become a climate activist.

So it seems the blog baton has made its way back to the fundraising department!

Sadly for me, my fabulous colleagues have already eloquently blogged about the importance of our supporters and the invaluable independence Greenpeace enjoys as a result of their generosity. So I'll do my best to cobble together a few meagre anecdotes about what it is I get up to here, but I want to join in the chorus of thank yous to our wonderful supporters – we couldn't do it without you!

On my side, you could say that a role at Greenpeace might have been in the cards. As a little kid, when I was taken along to the peace marches in Vancouver in the 80s, I knew right away that I wanted to march with a sign! Although too young to read or write, I of course made my own nonsensical finger-painted sign to proudly carry. Fast forward to learning how to write, and McDonalds started receiving letters asking them to stop using Styrofoam packaging in my childish scrawl (PS: in 1990 they agreed to stop. Yay!)
