John West promised its customers that all of its tuna would come from sustainable fishing methods in 2016. But their bosses are breaking that promise, infact they’ve managed a measly 2%.

Destructive tuna fishing by companies like John West are putting ever more pressure on tuna populations, and damaging all kinds of marine animals - including endangered species - which are needlessly killed in the hunt for the tuna we eat.

Tuna has finally gone mainstream, following the outcry in the media that John West* has broken its sustainability and traceability promises. 

We’ve reached millions of people, from This Morning with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine show, to The Times front page and countless other newspapers, everyone is outraged by the embarrassing progress John West has made meeting its sustainability promise to customers. 

There was a time when it was rare to see solar power on rooftops here in the UK. Our cloudy skies and the high cost of panels meant the technology was out of reach in all but the sunniest parts of the country.

But over the last decade, things have changed dramatically.

Three weeks ago, we woke up to the news of Shell leaving the Arctic. I personally woke up and googled ‘Shell Arctic’ first thing in the morning. We knew that it was the last day of the drilling window. We knew that Shell had tried to extend its deadline and got a NO for an answer.  We knew Shell was going to be wrapping up and leaving soon – but this?

This December, world leaders will gather in Paris for COP 21 - a global climate conference convened by the United Nations. As these global leaders sit down to negotiate about climate change, people like you will be gathering together around the world to stand up for the climate - join us in London on Sunday 29th November!

John West’s claims that its customers can see “exactly where their fish was caught” is deeply misleading - according to a crowdsourced Greenpeace investigation. 

The investigation found tuna cans with “100% traceable” label can’t be traced as John West claims and that the company has been failing to publicise the fact that some of its tuna comes from Thailand- a country notorious for human rights abuses in the fishing industry. 

It’s only been a few days since our tuna league table exposed John West’s broken promise to only source sustainable tuna, but it’s been making waves everywhere.  We’ve had celebrities like Gillian Anderson coming out in support of the campaign, and were even invited on This Morning with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall to talk about how John West’s customers have been duped.
