Beating about the bush, yet again

Posted by jamie — 1 October 2007 at 3:35pm - Comments

So, no surprises last week as George Bush's climate change summit ended up being pretty much what everyone expected it would - a futile and elitist talking shop which was a vain attempt for the outgoing president (15 months and counting) to say that he 'did something' about climate change.

The yellow monster lurking underground

In making sure that nuclear power doesn't become part of the UK's energy policy, we tend to focus on the myth that it will solve climate change, the vast expense and the danger from radioactive waste. However, the other end of the supply chain is also fraught with problems and uranium mining can seriously damage your health. Just watch this video:

A little belated, but this has only just crossed our radar. New Jersey has become the third US state to adopt legislation to limit its emissions.

US harpoons climate language in leaked document

If we needed more proof that the Bush administration is still ignoring the global scientific consensus on climate change, we now have it - in the form of a leaked document from the G8. Track changes in the Word document - a draft communique on climate change and energy security - reveals the edits made by the Bush administration.

The opening paragraph says it all really:

Exxon: still pumping out lies

It's an absolute gift when companies who are being less than kind to the environment have an advertising campaign that, with a few tweaks, can be subverted to expose their dodgy deeds. Such a treat came in the form of the Kleenex 'Let It Out' adverts that have been showing in various countries (here's an example for those who haven't seen it) and the guys in the US and Canada running the Kleercut campaign jumped on it.

The rice contamination scandal continues to grow but the Food Standards Agency isn't enforcing the law

It never rains but it pours, and the scandal of US rice contaminated with an illegal genetically modified (GM) variety shows no signs of slowing down. In the latest twist, Friends of the Earth has indicated it intends to launch legal proceedings against the Food Standards Authority (FSA) after finding contaminated rice on sale in UK supermarkets.

'Genetic engineering - hands off', the label says on a plate of rice contaminated with an illegal GM variety

'Genetic engineering - hands off', the label says on a plate of rice contaminated with an illegal GM variety

Up to one fifth of rice entering the EU is contaminated with an illegal genetically modified (GM) strain from the US. Those are the findings of the European Commission's own investigation into EU rice imports, following the admission in August by the US government that untested strains of GM rice had entered the food chain.

This forest has been clearcut to produce Kimberly Clark toilet and tissue paper products even though recycled alternatives exist

Kleenex, one of the most well known brands of tissue products in the world, is helping to destroy the world's remaining ancient forests.
