Turning up the heat on Esso

Greenpeace turned up the heat this week as the biggest oil company in the world prepared for its annual general meeting in Texas.

As a result, more shareholders supported a resolution calling for Esso (ExxonMobil in the US) to act on two hot issues: global warming and renewable energy.

The UK Stop Esso campaign was launched in May 2001 by coalition members Greenpeace, People and Planet and Friends of the Earth.

Bianca Jagger unveiled a "Boycott Esso" mobile billboard at the campaign launch. The Body Shop, Annie Lennox, Ralph Fiennes, Jerome Flynn, Damien Hirst, Keith Allen and several politicians signed up to the boycott.

On the first Stop Esso Day, in villages, towns and cities across the UK and Ireland, over 3000 people peacefully and legally campaigned at Esso petrol stations.

Stop Esso Day II saw Julia Sawalha and Alan Davies join the protests at Esso petrol stations.

These were the largest non-violent direct actions against global warming ever seen in the UK.

May 2002 also marked the launch of Stop ExxonMobil, a US campaign aimed at Esso's parent company. Over the following months, Stop Esso spread around the globe.

The links between the Bush administration and Esso are an "open secret" in the US. A Deutsche Bank report stated that Esso's "political clout" means it "may find itself in pole position in a changed-regime Iraq".

Esso and global warming

Global warming is caused by burning fossil fuels (oil, coal and gas). It is the biggest environmental problem we face today, and the effects - extreme weather, drought and disease - are already being felt.

To counter the effects of global warming, the burning of fossil fuels must be reduced and phased out over the next 30-40 years.

Spoils of war

Esso is doing more than any other company to keep the US hooked on oil. This is fuelling Bush's war and causing global warming.

For decades Esso (ExxonMobil in the USA) has opposed any policy seeking to reduce the need for oil in the US.

Oil is now covering more than 500 km of the Spanish Coast, carried by the Gulf Stream. The Spanish Government has conceded that more than 20,000 metric tonnes has leaked from the Prestige. And experts expect the Portugese coast to be affected next...

Action!
As the clean-up operation continues to lack co-ordination, Greenpeace activists protested outside the Galician provincial Government building in La Coruna on Saturday - confronting the Vice President with buckets of oil collected from a nearby beach.

Stop Esso: Julia Sawalha

Why particularly Esso?
They make 15.6 billion dollars a year in profit and they are not investing one dollar of that into clean renewable energy and the fact that they invested in President Bush's campaign and as a result of that Bush has backed out of the Kyoto Protocol is deeply disturbing to me. That they are sabotaging any international action on global warming is very frightening. I think that they are being a big bully and I think it's time we stood up to them.

You know I think as an individual you can feel really helpless in the face of environmental issues, I think as long as people know what is going on, this is the kind of campaign, like you can hear people beeping behind, they can really feel like they are doing something.

What would you say to motorists who are still buying from Esso?
I'd say don't put a tiger in your tank

What would your message to Esso be?
Be afraid, be very afraid.

Saturday 18th May: Hundreds of protesters gathered at Esso garages around the country - asking motorists to stop buying petrol from Esso.

The case against Esso

You could say that all big oil companies are the bad guys of global warming. They have discovered more oil than we can use without causing irreversible damage to the climate, and they continue to search for more.

But Esso (ExxonMobil) gets the prize! Why? Because Esso:

Esso powers the throne of George Bush
Esso donated $1,086,080 to George Bush's Republican Party at the start of his election campaign. Unsurprisingly, Bush then did exactly what the oil giants wanted, pulling the United States out of the Kyoto protocol as soon as he was elected!

An international campaign to stop Esso

The Stop Esso campaign is a coalition of Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and People & Planet.

The Stop Esso campaign is calling on the public not to buy any Esso products until the US based oil company changes their stand on global warming.

Year by year we see more devastating floods, droughts, storms, melting icecaps and dying coral reefs around the world. Global warming is to blame. And UN scientists have agreed that pollution from fossil fuels is the main cause.

ESSO doesn't give a damn about global warming. The biggest oil-company in the world, Esso (Exxon Mobil):

PRETEND global warming isn't happening
Do more than any other company to keep the USA hooked on oil fuelling President Bush's war
Spend millions on DIRTY TRICKS to gain the favour of politicians such as Bush, to discredit climate science and to sabotage international climate negotiations such as Kyoto
Invest NOTHING in renewable energy or green fuels such as bio-diesel
