Greenpeace volunteers st up a 'forest crime scene' at Kelvingrove Art Museum in Glasgow

Glasgow Council officials today ordered contractors to stop work replacing hardwood floors during the Lottery funded refurbishment of Kelvingrove art gallery and museum, after nearly 100 Greenpeace activists invaded the site to expose the use of endangered rainforest timber.

Greenpeace forest campaigner Belinda Fletcher said,

"We are delighted that Kelvingrove art gallery and museum has agreed to suspend the contract for flooring after endangered rainforest timber was found on the site. We will be working closely with Kelvingrove to ensure that the rest of the timber used comes from legal and sustainable sources such as that certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)."

A new film produced by Greenpeace is screening as part of the Spice! season at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London.

Miles to Go details a 6000 km road trip where Greenpeace volunteers cross India, filming environmental violations by big businesses. They muster locals to fight the corporate criminals and ensure the authorities clean up their act.

Greenpeace organised the road trip, dubbed "1000 Bhopals", to raise awareness of the fact that there are indeed a thousand Bhopals happening across India now.

The politics of GM

GM-o-Meter polling in London

GM-o-Meter polling in London

The results of the 'GM Nation?' debate show the essential rejection of GM. The government launched the 'GM Nation?' exercise amid allegations that Downing Street was ignoring huge public disquiet over the proposed genetic modification of food and crops. Over 37,000 people took part, with 86 percent of people stating an outright rejection of growing GM crops in the UK.

We did some polling of our own, and submitted our results to the GM Public Debate committee. Again there was an overwhelming rejection of GM.

The last major report on GM this year, the results of farm scale trials of GM crops, were published on 16 October. The trials only examined the effect of weedkillers on wildlife. The key issues of cross-pollination, contamination of the global food chain, gene transfer and effects on human health remain unexplored and will not be looked at by these trials.

A final commercialisation decision will be made in 2004, after the results of the Farm Scale Evaluations have been published.

In a move unprecedented in its history, the US government has indicted an entire organisation - Greenpeace, Inc. - for the peaceful protest activities of its supporters. (Greenpeace Inc is the Greenpeace office in the USA).
