Hinkley deal makes no economic sense - Greenpeace

Commenting on the agreement struck by French-owned EDF and China’s CGN today to build a fleet of new nuclear reactors at Hinkley and other two locations in the UK, Greenpeace UK chief scientist Dr Doug Parr said:

“With this deal George Osborne is not so much backing the wrong horse as betting billions of consumers’ money on a nag running backwards. There’s no end in sight for the nuclear industry’s dependence on billion-pound handouts whilst the renewable sector is on the verge of going subsidy free. Backing the former and punishing the latter makes no economic sense whatsoever. Our grandchildren will one day wonder why their bills are propping up a foreign-owned, outdated, and costly nuclear industry instead of supporting cutting-edge UK firms producing cheap clean energy.

Beijing, August 7, 2014: The existence of a giant coal mine illegally encroaching on a nature reserve at the source of the iconic Yellow River, China’s second longest, has been brought to light by a Greenpeace investigation published by Energydesk today.

The sprawling mining operation, covering an area 14 times the size of the City of London at an altitude of over 4,000m, has been documented in detail for the first time in a series of striking pictures taken by undercover campaigners from Greenpeace’s Beijing office. The industrial site spans an entire coal industry chain, from huge opencast mines to the highest coking plant in the world.

A worker screens a pattern onto children's wear in Huzhou, China

When I look at these shockingly colourful pictures of clothes manufacturing in China, it is a stark reminder that you don’t always know the full story behind the production of your kid's garments.

Local farmer Hu Shan pulls up a dead yang chai bush near Shenhua's Number 8 water well

We’ve had a fantastic, hot summer this year, cooling down with a drink of water whenever needed.

So when I look at Bo Qiu’s photo feature of water shortages in Inner Mongolia it is a strong reminder that easy access to clean water is not a given for everyone.

Fruit and vegetables sold by Tesco in China carry illegal levels of pesticides

Evan Brooks blogs about Greenpeace East Asia’s investigation into pesticides on Tesco produce.

After three years of independent testing, produce sold at Tesco supermarkets in China continues to show levels of pesticides far above the legal limit. When is Tesco going to wake up and smell the chemically-doused produce?
