Drillstar: onboard

At dawn today three Greenpeace volunteers began their descent from the 180ft drillstack. The Greenpeace volunteers have maintained their occupation of the JET drillstar for over 24 hrs, successfully preventing it from going to sea to drill for more killer oil.

One of the three volunteer climbers just down from the rig said, "we spent most of yesterday positioned half way up the drillstack determined to prevent the rig from moving to drill for more oil, but as it started to get cold and dark we made our way further up the drillstack to join the six other climbers who had already made a safe warm base."

Greenpeace - taking action against GMYou may have been slightly confused by recent media reports that Greenpeace will not take direct action against so called golden rice. The reason for this misunderstanding is that a Greenpeace campaigner made comments at a press conference in Lyons that were linked in ways that he did not intend.

21 November, 2000

Greenpeace climbers involved in the Eco-Chicken invasion of the Cargill GM soya factory in Liverpool Docks yesterday were served with an injunction this morning ordering them to leave. The climbers are now complying with this injunction and have descended from their perch in order to leave the premises.

The climbers were part of a team of 60 Greenpeace volunteers who invaded the Cargill plant yesterday. The other volunteers, dressed in chicken costumes, were ejected yesterday with eight arrests. Four chickens were charged with aggravated trespass after locking themselves onto a conveyor belt that carries GM soya for processing. They will appear at Sefton Magistrates court tomorrow (Wednesday 22 November at 13.45). The other four have been bailed to appear on 2 February 2001.
