Sellafield's radioactive salmon

Radioactive waste from Sellafield has been found in Scottish farmed salmon sold in major British supermarkets. Tests commissioned by Greenpeace revealed traces of radioactive waste in packets of fresh and smoked salmon.

The tests, conducted independently by Southampton University's oceanography centre, found low levels Technetium-99 (Tc-99) in farmed Scottish salmon sold at Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda, Safeway, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer.


Tc-99 is a byproduct of Magnox fuel reprocessing. Dr David Santillo, a scientist at Greenpeace's research laboratories at Exeter University, said: "Tc-99 should not be there at all. It is inexplicable yet significant. Scottish salmon is marketed as something that comes from a pristine environment."

Nuclear free seas flotilla 2002

The Rainbow Warrior took its place among The Nuclear Free Irish Sea Flotilla at an official launch in Dublin on Sunday.

Dublin's Lord Mayor, Councillor Dermot Lacey, along with politicians and celebrities unveiled the flotilla, which will sail out into the Irish Sea to peacefully protest against the two nuclear freighters carrying rejected plutonium fuel back from Japan.

We met Energy Minister Brian Wilson on the steps of the DTI, to present him with a bunch of red roses and a Valentine's Day card from the nuclear power industry.

Wearing radiation suits and goggles, we gave him a card, signed 'with love from the nuclear industry', containing the following heartfelt poem:

"Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
The nuclear industry,
Would've died without you."

Today Greenpeace is taking the unusual step of publishing a leaked copy of a draft summary of a report detailing the future of UK energy policy.

The government is leaving the door open for a wave of dangerous new nuclear power stations across Britain, according to the confidential report, which is part of the government's Energy Review.

Timid targets for the generation of energy by renewable technology - like wind, wave and solar power - are also being set.
