UK nuclear reactors are defective, say government inspectors

A nuclear expert has called for nuclear reactors in the UK to be "immediately shut down" after secret documents written by government inspectors reveal they contain structural defects.

The documents - which were passed to Greenpeace days before Tony Blair is expected to give the go-ahead to a new generation of nuclear power stations - show that the government's Nuclear Safety Directorate (NSD) has identified cracks in the cores of up to 14 UK reactors, rendering them at increased risk of a radiological accident.

Tony Blair has announced that nuclear power is now "back on the agenda with a vengeance".

Speaking at a CBI dinner last night, Blair made his strongest admission yet that the Energy Review is a smokescreen for a decision that has already been taken: to build a new generation of nuclear power stations.

It takes over a million years for nuclear waste to become safe, (a time span equivalent to the evolution of modern man). Yet one man is set to make a decision that will increase lethal waste levels threefold. Is this the sort of legacy Tony Blair wants to leave mankind? We think not.

A year late - the government announced the results of their review of climate change initiatives today and told us what we already knew. They are not going to meet their targets. But instead of taking this opportunity to put in place measures that would really make a difference to reduce climate damaging emissions, they've lowered their expectations.

A climber at the CBI conference holds a banner reading NUCLEAR: WRONG ANSWER

This morning Greenpeace climbers scuppered Blair's nuclear announcement by delaying the Prime Minister's planned pro nuclear speech at the CBI annual conference.

Two Greenpeace climbers scaled the ceiling above the speakers podium holding banners saying 'nuclear - wrong answer' and then dropping down 'radioactive' confetti preventing Blair from speaking in the main gallery.

Downing Street blockaded with tonnes of coal

This morning we sent a reminder to Tony Blair of his commitment to tackle climate change - several tonnes of coal.

Greenpeace volunteers blockaded three entrances to Downing Street as Tony Blair rows back on his commitment to the Kyoto Protocol. In a series of statements in recent weeks the Prime Minister has cast doubt on his long-term support for the global agreement, while British emissions of carbon-dioxide have risen since he came to power.

Extreme weather events are on the increase


The G8 summit in Gleneagles has closed missing a major opportunity to tackle dangerous climate change.

The communiqué states: "Climate change is a serious long term challenge that has the potential to affect every part of the globe," and that they will act with "resolve and urgency" to reduce emissions.
