The Esso oil corporation has backed down from claims that a campaign against its products has had no effect, and now admits that environmentalists are hitting its business.

The world's largest company is taking Greenpeace - a leading member of the StopEsso campaign - to court in France, claiming that the organisation has inflicted reputational damage on the Esso brand name. The Texas-based corporation is demanding 80,000 Euros a day in compensation.

Stop Esso: Julia Sawalha

Why particularly Esso?
They make 15.6 billion dollars a year in profit and they are not investing one dollar of that into clean renewable energy and the fact that they invested in President Bush's campaign and as a result of that Bush has backed out of the Kyoto Protocol is deeply disturbing to me. That they are sabotaging any international action on global warming is very frightening. I think that they are being a big bully and I think it's time we stood up to them.

You know I think as an individual you can feel really helpless in the face of environmental issues, I think as long as people know what is going on, this is the kind of campaign, like you can hear people beeping behind, they can really feel like they are doing something.

What would you say to motorists who are still buying from Esso?
I'd say don't put a tiger in your tank

What would your message to Esso be?
Be afraid, be very afraid.

Stop Esso day: Julia Sawalha and Alan Davies

Britain's biggest ever protest against global warming is taking place today. Campaigners took to the forecourts of 400 Esso garages across the country from 11am as part of a national day of action against the US oil giant, which has done more than any other company to sabotage international action on climate change.

Giant nuts about Stop Esso

Cerne Abbas chalk giant

The ancient Cerne Abbas chalk giant in Dorset joined the StopEsso campaign this morning after supporters placed a banner in his hand saying "I'VE GOT THE BALLS TO BOYCOTT ESSO."

The well-endowed giant's proclamation is part of an international StopEsso week, which has already seen protests across the globe. It finishes in the UK on Saturday, with around 4000 people joining events outside one quarter (over 400) of Esso's garages to give its customers one clear message: DON'T BUY ESSO!

"Esso doesn't give a damn about global warming. But the Giant, along with thousands of people across the UK this Saturday, is standing up to the way this company is paying for George Bush's climate policy," said Cindy Baxter StopEsso Campaign Coordinator.

The case against Esso

Posted by bex — 14 May 2002 at 12:00am - Comments

You could say that all big oil companies are the bad guys of global warming. They have discovered more oil than we can use without causing irreversible damage to the climate, and they continue to search for more.

But Esso (ExxonMobil) gets the prize! Why? Because Esso:

  • Esso powers the throne of George Bush
Esso donated $1,086,080 to George Bush's Republican Party at the start of his election campaign. Unsurprisingly, Bush then did exactly what the oil giants wanted, pulling the United States out of the Kyoto protocol as soon as he was elected!
