Investigation finds Australian bank Macquarie could be poised to asset strip UK Green Investment Bank

  1. Evidence uncovered of potential preparation for ‘asset stripping’ of GIB will add to concern around the deal from former ministers Greg Barker and Vince Cable and business figures such as Richard Branson.
  2. Macquarie preferred bidder despite track record of UK ‘asset stripping’ activity linked to other UK infrastructure acquisitions including M6 and Thames Water. 
  3. Green groups add voice to calls on Government for sale to Macquarie to be stopped.

An investigation has uncovered a process within the Green Investment Bank (GIB) establishing corporate structures commonly used in preparations for ‘asset-stripping’, ahead of its purchase by controversial Australian bank Macquarie from the UK Government for an estimated £2bn.

New renewable funding - Greenpeace response

In response to the government announcing contracts for funding eight new renewable energy projects, Greenpeace UK energy campaigner Jimmy Aldridge said:

"We welcome the commitment to improving UK energy security by getting off imports and backing clean, home-grown energy. But all this needs to happen much faster and on a bigger scale if we are to guarantee a safe supply of clean power to Britain's homes.

There were 57 applications for renewable projects with a fixed-price guarantee, yet DECC only granted 8 – all of which are for more expensive projects. Just yesterday David Cameron announced he wants to limit onshore wind farms, despite these being the cheapest source of clean, home-grown energy we have.

Panorama provides a narrow view of rising fuel bills

Last night Panorama attempted to answer the question what is fuelling rising energy bills, instead viewers were treated to a steady stream of arguments against renewable energy that went more or less unchallenged.
