The problem with aviation

In terms of damage to the climate, flying is 10 times worse than taking the train. It's responsible for 13 per cent of the UK's impact on the climate (the government's figures). And it's the fastest growing source of emissions in the UK; between 1990 and 2050, emissions from aviation are set to quadruple, which scientists say could wipe out all other emissions savings we make in every other sector (pdf).

G8 deal - Greenpeace response

Reacting to today's G8 agreement on climate change, Greenpeace UK director John Sauven said:

"George Bush's final gift to Blair falls short of what was needed to protect the climate. An agreement without targets is barely worth the paper it's written on."

He continued: "Bush says the US will 'seriously consider' substantial long term cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, but that's like saying aid to Africa is a good thing then refusing to actually commit to donating a single dollar."

New report is final piece in jigsaw, now world leaders must act.

As the last of three ground-breaking climate change reports by leading UN scientists was published in Bangkok, Greenpeace today demanded that world leaders finally wake up to the scale of the climate crisis and act immediately to slash emissions.

"The final piece of the jigsaw in now in place and our leaders have no more excuses," said Charlie Kronick, Greenpeace UK's senior climate campaigner.

Emmissions from transport are on the rise

Car manufacturers are trying to sabotage a new European climate law that would force them to improve the efficiency of their new vehicles. But there's time to act to make sure that Europe's cars are cleaner and greener in future.
