Responding to news today that the Chancellor George Osborne has given the oil and gas industry a multi-million pound hand-out, Dr Doug Parr, policy director at Greenpeace, said:

“It doesn’t look like Osborne cares one little bit about a true British growth sector, or about our planet. Our clean energy sector accounted for a third of all growth in the last year. Yet this massive hand-out to his polluting mates is yet another obstacle thrown in the path of Britain’s green industries.

Responding to news today that Chancellor George Osborne is set to hand-out half a billion pounds in subsidies to the gas industry, Doug Parr, head of policy at Greenpeace, said:

“Osborne’s going to hand over hundreds of millions of taxpayers’ money to the polluting and pricey gas industry. This is clearly bonkers, for economic and environmental reasons.

The Chancellor’s assault on our climate must stop. It’s time for David Cameron and Nick Clegg to intervene and stop him.

Today activists from Greenpeace and the National Pensioners Convention (NPC) joined forces outside Parliament to challenge George Osborne to take urgent action to end fuel poverty as official figures showed there had been 25,700 excess winter deaths in 2010/11.

To bring the shocking reality of freezing homes to George Osborne’s attention, Greenpeace and the NPC created a life sized ice covered living room, on St Margaret’s Street, right outside parliament.

Commenting on the joint action, John Sauven, Executive Director of Greenpeace said:

Ever since last month’s Budget, oil companies have been complaining about George Osborne’s tax on North Sea oil and gas. Yet many have just announced record profits - boosted considerably by current sky-high oil prices. What do they take us for?

'Greenest government ever' keeps us addicted to oil and other dirty energies

So yesterday's budget was from the self-proclaimed 'greenest government ever', but was it the greenest budget ever? How could it be, when it has done nothing to break our addiction with oil, hobbled the Green Investment Bank before it's even started, and provided a windfall for nuclear power.

The one bank we really should be saving

HBOS? Bailed. Lloyds TSB? Done. RBS? I'll get my chequebook. Green Investment Bank? Erm, no thanks.

The only bailing being done by today's government is on its green promises, and one stands out bigger than the rest: the commitment to establish a Green Investment Bank.
