Hong Kong, 17 October 2005 - China is in a prime position to become the world leader in wind power, according to a Greenpeace report released today.
Wind Guandong, a study of wind power potential in the heavily industrialised Guandong province in southern China, finds that the region could by 2020 alone, produce as much energy from wind power as Hong Kong's total current electricity supply.

A coalition of leading UK organisations has today welcomed an initiative by the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives to establish a cross-party consensus for action on climate change. The groups are calling on the government to join the initiative.
The Prime Minister has described climate change as "so far-reaching in its impact and irreversible in its destructive power, that it alters radically human existence." But UK emissions of carbon dioxide have risen under Labour.

Today (Rome - 11th October 2005) 30 Greenpeace activists boarded a ship carrying rainforest timber at the Italian port of Livorno. Eight activists, dressed as gorillas, climbed two of the ship's cranes to prevent its cargo from being unloaded.
The 'Guan He Kou' is carrying sawn timber from the Congo Basin, where widespread illegal logging is destroying the forest and driving gorillas and chimpanzees towards extinction. The rainforest is also home to millions of indigenous people who depend on the forest for their survival.

The Government will make a decision on whether to build a new nuclear weapon system to replace Trident in this parliament.
This is a key decision for the UK and the world. A decision to build a new UK nuclear bomb will endanger the threatened Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty and Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, the only international legally binding treaties covering nuclear disarmament. If they fall we face a breakdown of international co-operation leading to a nuclear free for all.

5th October 2005 Greenpeace today released a confidential draft of an internal Pentagon document "Doctrine for Joint Nuclear Operations", which reveals how the US government's aggressive new policies for nuclear weapons are being turned into military practice. The new doctrine shows military planners anticipating that US nuclear weapons might be used pre-emptively, and in much less intense crises than envisioned previously, including in a conventional conflict.

Jan Vande Putte of Greenpeace International said:
"ElBaradei's role as head of the pro nuclear International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) calls into question the wisdom of making him a noble laureate. The IAEA, while tasked with policing the spread of nuclear weapons is also responsible for spreading the very technologies and materials used to make nuclear weapons. However, in opposing the Iraq war and championing a nuclear free Middle East, ElBaradei has in recent years been a voice of sanity in the world of nuclear non-proliferation."

Imagine a future where the energy industry has to adapt to survive. Dirty coal-fired stations have been closed down and replaced by millions of clean and efficient mini power stations. Local authorities and even households have become players in the energy business.
The current centralised model typified by large cooling towers and electricity pylons wastes nearly two-thirds of the energy. Virtually all the heat is thrown away and "shipping" electricity for miles is a leaky business.
