Commenting on the LibDem manifesto, Greenpeace UK chief scientist Dr Doug Parr said:

"If many of these pledges on energy and nature protection were to be enacted it would be a huge win for the environment. Now we need to know where the red lines are in any negotiations with potential coalition partners, and how high up the priority list environmental improvement is for the Lib Dems. Are their red lines green?"

Renewables CfD auction - Greenpeace response

In response to the first Contracts for Difference auctions for renewables, Greenpeace Chief Scientist Dr Doug Parr said -

“Today’s announcements show renewables’ costs are plummeting, and will mount a growing challenge to conventional sources of power in delivering energy security for the UK. Those who say we should tackle climate change but are opposed to wind and solar farms need to explain how they plan to cut carbon emissions whilst keeping consumer bills as low as possible. We’ve known onshore wind is much cheaper than nuclear for a while, but now we learn that solar power is already cheaper than new gas generation in some cases.

Costly Coal - Shareholder risk in Coal India

Investors will soon be offered further equity (an FPO of 10 per cent) in the Indian Government majority-owned Coal India Limited (CIL).

This FPO will likely position investing in Coal India as an “opportunity” for investors in a robust emerging market, on the basis of widely held assumptions regarding India’s continued reliance on thermal coal for power generation; and it having among the largest, lowest priced coal resources in the world.

Lancashire county councillors greeted with anti-fracking message today

Another fracking application, another town. I’m not sure the ‘Not For Shale roadshow on tour’ t-shirt is ready to compete yet with the One Direction world tour t-shirt. But we’ve already appeared in Chichester, Midhurst, and today is Thursday so it must be sunny Preston.

How tiny plastic people protested around the world

The news of LEGO's cosy relationship with Shell has led to tiny protests erupting around the country - nay, the world. Famous national and international landmarks have been festooned with banners as the streets resounded the stamp of little plastic feet. What a day it's been.

Thursday 26th June, 2014. London - In response to the official announcement by Ofgem that they are referring the UK energy market for investigation, Dr Doug Parr, Chief Scientist at Greenpeace UK, said :

“What UK consumers need from this investigation is more than yet another ineffectual slap on the wrist for the big six’s cartel. We need real change to the market so that companies offering a better deal for customers and the environment are no longer shut out of the market, but more importantly we need to clear the way for alternative business models to the big utilities. Cities and communities have led the successful transformation of the German energy system, freeing consumers from the stranglehold of the utilities.
