New report: ambitious efficiency & renewables targets could slash imports by 45 per cent more than EU plans

Brussels, 25 June 2014 – As EU leaders consider measures to improve Europe’s energy security at a summit in Brussels, a new report has exposed European Commission plans as woefully inadequate to cut reliance on energy imports, said Greenpeace. The report released today shows that strong EU commitments on renewables and energy efficiency could reduce the need for imports by 45 per cent more in 2030 than under the EU’s existing plans [1].

London - In response to the Green Investment Bank's announcement of their annual results, Greenpeace UK energy campaigner Louise Hutchins said :

“One year on, the Green Investment Bank is clearly a success story, driving investment where it is needed in Britain’s cutting edge renewable industries. But the level of investment still doesn’t match Britain’s strategic requirements. George Osborne should now give the Bank freedom to borrow to invest at a much bigger scale, to modernise Britain’s decaying, polluting energy system and give a boost to the economy.

Shock: 3/4 British people want fracking companies to ask before tunnelling underneath their homes.

Last month we found out that the government is cooking up plans to strip homeowners and tenants of their legal right to deny permission to companies that want to frack directly underneath their property. If every English person’s home is their castle, then government ministers are currently digging a tunnel underneath the ramparts to let the frackers in.
