HISTORICAL NOTE
Dayton's, an upscale Midwestern department store chain, was founded in Minneapolis in 1902 by George Draper Dayton. The business had its beginnings in 1878 with the establishment of a dry goods business known as Goodfellow and Eastman. Dayton constructed a large store building at Nicollet Avenue and Seventh Street in downtown Minneapolis, which opened in 1902 with R.S. Goodfellow & Company as tenant. Dayton became a partner in the firm, which became Dayton's Dry Goods Company in 1903 after he bought out his business partners.
In 1922 the name of the business was changed to The Dayton Company, and it became Dayton-Hudson Corporation in 1969. In 1990 Dayton-Hudson acquired Marshall Field's department stores. Dayton-Hudson became Target Corporation in 2000. In 2001 Dayton's department stores were renamed Marshall Field's, and in 2004 Target Corporation sold the Marshall Field's department store group to May Department Stores, which in 2005 merged with Federated Department Stores, owners of Macy's. In 2006 the Marshall Field's stores took the Macy's name. The downtown Minneapolis store, re-branded as Macy's, closed in 2017.
The Dayton's 8th floor auditorium shows began around 1963 and ran for more than 45 years, many of them under the direction of special events director John Gantert.

8TH FLOOR AUDITORIUM EVENT FILES
The auditorium was built in 1963 and was used for store events. Auditorium staff worked in tandem with the Marketing Events Team.
Holiday Shows
| Originally called the Christmas show, it became known as the holiday show in the early 2000s. The first show was held in 1963. There were different themes from 1963 through 2008. The 2008 show was repeated annually thereafter through 2016. | |||||||||||||
