The rice contamination scandal continues to grow but the Food Standards Agency isn't enforcing the law

It never rains but it pours, and the scandal of US rice contaminated with an illegal genetically modified (GM) variety shows no signs of slowing down. In the latest twist, Friends of the Earth has indicated it intends to launch legal proceedings against the Food Standards Authority (FSA) after finding contaminated rice on sale in UK supermarkets.

'Genetic engineering - hands off', the label says on a plate of rice contaminated with an illegal GM variety

Up to one fifth of rice entering the EU is contaminated with an illegal genetically modified (GM) strain from the US. Those are the findings of the European Commission's own investigation into EU rice imports, following the admission in August by the US government that untested strains of GM rice had entered the food chain.

In the past five years the US military has developed an aggressive new nuclear doctrine: military documents such as 2002's Nuclear Posture Review and the 2005 Pentagon paper Doctrine for Joint Nuclear Operations revealed that that nukes may be used as 'weapons of first resort' as well as being integrated with conventional forces.

Kimberly-Clark and Kleenex - wiping away the world's ancient forests

This forest has been clearcut to produce Kimberly Clark toilet and tissue paper products even though recycled alternatives exist

Kleenex, one of the most well known brands of tissue products in the world, is helping to destroy the world's remaining ancient forests.

G8 - Greenpeace response

Responding to the G8 communiqué on climate change Greenpeace executive director Stephen Tindale said:

"The scientific community has given an unequivocal signal that urgent and radical action is needed to cut emissions and stabilise the climate. The G8 communique has failed to acknowledge this warning. This has left the G8 leaders treading water on this crucial issue.

Greenpeace response to G8 climate agreement

7 July 2005 - Greenpeace today branded the G8 agreement on climate change 'a major missed opportunity to tackle dangerous climate change'.

Despite spin from the British government it is clear that there has been no change in the US position and it remains alone in resisting the urgent need for action.

EU bans US maize imports

The European Union has today (Friday 15th April) decided to prohibit all imports of US maize gluten feed which cannot be guaranteed free of Bt10, an illegal GM maize variety that has recently contaminated US farms and been imported into the EU. This decision is likely to mean a de facto ban on all US maize imports, since the GM company Syngenta, which produced Bt10 maize, has been unable to provide a method to detect for its presence.

Greenpeace warned that without more coherent action by EU governments Europe will remain exposed to high-risk imports of illegal GMOs, in wheat, rice, soybeans and rape seed, as well as maize.

President Bush today said the solution to climate change lies in 'the power of human ingenuity.'

He claimed 'emerging technologies such as hydrogen powered vehicles, electricity from renewable energy sources and clean coal technology will encourage economic growth that is environmentally responsible.'

Global warming "a conspiracy against America" says Bush advisor

An advisor to President Bush on climate issues today claimed global warming is a myth designed to 'hamper American competitiveness.' Myron Ebell, a director at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, today told Radio 4 that claims the climate is threatened are 'ridiculous, unrealistic and alarmist.'
