BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Napoleon Noel Nadeau was born December 25, 1889 in Marinette, Wisconsin. Following his graduation from Marinette High School, he attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison for three years where he studied and worked as a photographer. He was then employed by the Hibbard Studio in Minneapolis for seven years before opening his own photographic studio. In 1932, Nadeau was hired as department photographer for the Conservation Department and charged with both documenting the work of the department and producing photographs for educational purposes. His work was used in exhibits, as well as being published in newspapers and journals including the Minnesota Conservationist. He served in this capacity until 1937.
Nadeau also developed the first aero camera used in the United States, made the first aero photographs in the Twin Cities, and served in the Secret Service and the National Guard during World War II. The date of his death is unknown.
This biographical information was taken from the Minnesota Department of Conservation Commissioner's office general correspondence (cataloged separately).
SCOPE AND CONTENTS
Nadeau's photographs mainly document the activities and buildings of the forestry division and include images of state forests; timber stands and forest vegetation; forest industries, particularly logging, lumbering, paper making, Christmas trees, and maple sugar; forest fires and fire prevention methods and equipment; forest deterioration and reproduction, mainly at the Badoura State Nursery; farmland erosion and prevention efforts; permanent structural improvements, especially bridges, forestry buildings, ranger stations, fire towers, roads, trails, dams, and docks; recreational areas and activities, including campgrounds, picnic areas, and beaches, fishing and hunting, and lakes and rivers; wildlife; work of various emergency relief administration agencies, particularly the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA); educational activities, such as exhibits, state fair demonstrations, signs and maps, archaeological work, Native American pageants, and forestry research; agriculture; and departmental personnel and the Conservation Commission. A large number of the photographs were taken in the state parks, particularly Itasca, Scenic, and Whitewater.
Included in the logging photographs are a set documenting a1937 log drive on the Little Fork River, the "last log drive in Minnesota." There are also series of old time logging photographs, reproductions Nadeau made from original photographs; photographs by Nadeau used in published works to promote education and tourism; and photographs of campsites taken in the early 1940s. It is unknown whether the latter were taken by Nadeau.
The majority of the photographs are mounted on pressboard backings, one per sheet for 8 inch by 10 inch photographs, four per sheet for smaller images. Each photograph is identified with a short description and its Conservation Department number. The majority also are accompanied by a negative, usually housed in an envelope mounted on the reverse side of the pressboard backing.
ARRANGEMENT
The photographs are arranged in a numerical order developed by Conservation Department employee Betty Bachman, each numerical section relating to a topical division.

121.A.2.1 | 1 | Index: Minnesota Department of Forestry Picture Prints, 1932-1937. 2 folders.
Arranged alphabetically by topic, this index is both a key and a cross reference listing to the photographs taken by Nadeau during 1932 to 1937. The cross reference listings may document multiple activities by the department. Some of the categories are incomplete, however, and the researcher should rely on the following list for a complete inventory. |
Class No. 1: Forests and stands of trees:
Images of state forests and timber stands, particularly cultural operations; stands of jack, Norway, and white pine, black spruce and cedar; and samples of clear and selective cutting. A large number were taken at the Badoura State Nursery, Itasca State Park, and the Kabetogama Timber Reserve. There are also images of timber stands in the Chippewa National Forest and the Red Lake Indian Reservation and examples of good and poor windbreaks, particularly showing the effect of drought.

These photographs document logging and the lumber, paper making, Christmas tree, and maple sugar industries. The logging images show logging camps, particularly those of the Cloquet Logging Company; slash cutting and disposal; selective cutting done by the International Lumber Company; both CCC and WPA work crews; various logging equipment such as horse and diesel jammers, caterpillars, and cranes; and a 1937 log drive on the Little Fork River from the Nett Lake Indian Reservation to International Falls, with shots of lumberjacks and log jams. It was possibly the last log drive in the state. The remainder of the photographs mainly document sawmill operations of the International Lumber Company, paper mills in International Falls, Christmas tree farms and the cutting, baling and processing of the trees, and sap gathering and cooking for maple syrup.

Class No. 5: Permanent improvements (not including relief administration projects as a whole):
Mainly photographs of bridges, forestry buildings, roads and trails, dams, and docks. This section contains several groupings of photographs that were maintained by the Conservation Department as part of the Nadeau series but which may or may not be his work. Most are either undated or dated 1940-1941. The majority document buildings used by the forestry division, including cabins, warehouses, boathouses, ranger stations, fire towers, offices, and headquarters buildings, located mainly in the state parks, particularly Itasca and Scenic, and at various forestry headquarters sites. There are also images of roads and trails maintained by Boy Scouts, trails in Itasca State Park, the Gunflint Trail, and CCC dam construction crews.
